Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about saving energy

How much energy can I save?

How much energy you can save depends on countless factors. By choosing a new economical fridge-freezer, replacing incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs, replacing electric heaters with an infrared panel and choosing a sustainable washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher, an average family can save up to 1.500 kWh per year. This results in a saving of about 330 euros.

How much energy does an average Dutch family use?

An average Dutch family uses 2.730 kWh of electricity. Still, an average says little. For example, 1 in 8 families uses less than 1.500 kWh per year, while 1 in 7 families uses more than 5.000 kWh per year.

How can I prevent standby consumption?

Always unplug the appliance when you are not going to use it for a while. In addition, use a power strip with an on/off switch. Energy-saving plugs are also handy. These switch off standby mode completely.

Are energy-efficient bulbs more expensive?

Yes and no. Yes because an energy-efficient LED bulb will cost more in the shop than a halogen bulb. No because energy-efficient bulbs use less electricity and also last much longer. For example, an LED bulb has 15 times more burning hours than an incandescent bulb.

Am I not better off keeping my incandescent bulb until it breaks?

No. Milieu Centraal has calculated this, and the extra environmental impact caused by throwing away the incandescent bulb and making a new LED bulb is minimal. The environmental gain in the longer term is many times greater.
