Saving tips: dishwasher
The dishwasher is one of the biggest energy users in the home. An average dishwashing programme easily takes two hours and in most households the dishwasher runs every day. The dishwasher is estimated to account for seven per cent of total energy consumption in the home. A lot can be saved on the dishwasher's energy consumption by using the dishwasher consciously. Besides saving on energy consumption, water can also be saved. On an annual basis this can make a considerable difference to the energy and water bill.

01The right dishwasher
Saving on the energy consumption of the dishwasher starts with choosing the right dishwasher. There are big differences in efficiency between the various models. The energy label shows how economical a dishwasher is. The current energy labels range from A (most economical) to G (least economical).
Modern dishwashers are equipped with an eco programme, specially designed for more energy-efficient washing. An eco programme is often enough to get the dishes properly clean. The programme is much more economical and cheaper than other programmes.
Saving on the energy consumption of a dishwasher
We recommend only using the eco programme when the dishwasher is completely full. That way the programme can run optimally. Moreover, it is usually not necessary to pre-rinse the dishes first. We therefore advise against using hot water for pre-rinsing. Often it is enough to scrape off some food scraps first.
Another tip is to make use of extra crockery. That is better than buying a smaller dishwasher. Then fill the dishwasher gradually and only run it when it is actually full. In addition, always switch older dishwashers off. That way it is possible to save more electricity.
Finally, consider whether it is really necessary to let the dishwasher do the work. With a small amount of washing up, it can pay off considerably to do the dishes by hand. This can achieve an energy saving of as much as sixty per cent of the dishwasher's consumption. On the other hand, washing up the traditional way does waste rather too much water, although there are solutions for that too.
More economical dishwashers generally cost more than the less economical models. In general, the investment in an economical model can be recouped in the longer term through the lower energy costs that come with this model. Besides paying attention to energy consumption, it is also sensible to pay attention to a dishwasher's water consumption. Some economical dishwashers use considerably less water per wash, because, for example, they use the wash water two or more times.
Other saving tips for the dishwasher
Besides choosing the right dishwasher, there are also other ways to save on energy consumption.
Consider washing by hand
When there are only a few dirty dishes, it can be a good idea to wash them by hand. This also applies to large pans or dishes that take up an unnecessary amount of space in the dishwasher. By washing these by hand, more space is left for other dishes.
Make sure the dishwasher is full
The dishwasher always uses the same amount of water, detergent and energy, regardless of the amount of dirty dishes. Get the most out of the dishwasher by filling it properly.
Wash at a low temperature
When the dishes are not very dirty, they can easily be washed at a low temperature. This saves a lot of electricity. Heating water takes a lot of energy, after all.
Use the eco programme
Most dishwashers have an eco programme, in which the dishwasher washes as economically as possible. Depending on the dishwasher, this saves energy and often a lot of water too.
Don't pre-rinse
With virtually no dishwasher is it necessary to pre-rinse the dishes extensively. Just remove the large food scraps and then put the dishes straight into the dishwasher.
Switch the dishwasher off after the wash
In many cases a dishwasher stays on for a while after the dishes have been washed. Although the dishwasher is not actively running, it is still using energy. Switching electrical appliances off completely is, incidentally, an excellent general rule for saving on energy consumption.
Use the dishwasher during off-peak hours
With many energy contracts there are off-peak hours, during which you pay less for electricity. Check your energy contract for this and save money by using the dishwasher during these hours.
02Frequently asked questions about saving on the dishwasher
The dishwasher is a real time-saver that can be found in many homes. It is a really handy appliance, but it can also use a lot of energy. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to save (energy) on the dishwasher. Read on if you want to know more about this.
Always scrape the dishes first and only rinse them when this is really necessary. Then put pans at the bottom, because that is where the water jets are strongest. Place cups and glasses upside down and make sure glasses do not touch each other so that they dry neatly. Put plastic next to ceramics and at the top. Do not stack the dishes and do not cram the dishwasher fuller than it is designed for. Otherwise half of it comes out dirty and you needlessly use extra energy.
How can I best load my dishes?
Choose separate products and buy detergent, rinse aid and salt separately. The dosage is much easier to adjust to the dishwashing programme. Give preference to an ecological product. An example of this is the dishwasher detergents from Ecover.
Which dishwasher detergents are best to buy?
An average family saves about 20 euros a year by choosing the eco programme rather than the main programme. The main programme costs about 22 euro cents per wash.
How much can I save with the eco programme?
Do this about once a month. It is better to clean the dishwasher in good time than to keep getting dirty dishes that then have to be washed again. So run a full hot wash programme every month and clean the filters and the spray arms. Don't forget to clean the door seal regularly too, so that the dishwasher doesn't start to smell.
How often should I clean my dishwasher?
Consumentenbond recommends replacing dishwashers that are older than 13 years with a new, more energy-efficient model.
