Essent or Vattenfall: everything side by side

For solar panels, Essent and Vattenfall both work with feed-in tiers in 2026. Vattenfall charges no feed-in charges up to and including 500 kWh, while Essent charges from 251 kWh. From 501 kWh you already end up in a higher tier at Essent. With the calculation basis of 1.500 kWh used, Vattenfall's tier is more favourable than Essent's.

You pay these charges on all electricity fed back, not just on the surplus after net metering. From 1 January 2027, net metering ends and both suppliers switch to feed-in charges per kWh. That is already stated in the product information of Essent and Vattenfall.

The discount is also processed differently. Essent deposits the energy discount into your bank account twelve months after the start of supply. Vattenfall settles a one-off loyalty discount on the annual bill if you remain a customer until the agreed end date. If you leave early, that discount lapses according to Vattenfall's promotion terms.

For existing customers, Essent works with Thuisvoordeel. After signing up, depending on how long you have been a customer, you get 5%, 7,5% or 10% discount on the electricity rate and you build up savings credit. Vattenfall uses the points programme Vooruit, with which you save for energy discounts, energy-saving products and making your home more sustainable.

Scores side by side

The price score is based on the total annual amount from the table. As a result, in addition to the electricity and gas rate, the fixed supply charges, feed-in charges and cash discount also count. Bear in mind that this has been calculated on the basis of a reference consumption of 2.300 kWh electricity and 900 m³ gas, with a feed-in of 1.500 kWh, in accordance with the scheme that applies until 1 January 2027. With different data, another energy supplier may have a better price score. That is why it is advisable to make a personal comparison.

In terms of customer service, Essent clearly scores well. Essent can be reached by phone on weekdays from 9.00 to 18.00 and on Saturdays from 9.00 to 13.00. Vattenfall can be reached by phone on weekdays from 8.00 to 15.00 and also offers WhatsApp until 21.00.

The Essent or Vattenfall experiences differ greatly. On 28 August 2026, Vattenfall scored 3,3 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot. For Essent it is only 1,4 stars, which is very poor. The Essent customer service in particular is not rated well. Many say that agreements made are not kept, costs are unexpectedly higher and that it is very inconvenient that communication largely takes place via a chatbot.

Vattenfall wins when it comes to the app and insight. On the check date, the Vattenfall Energie-app scored 4,7 out of 5 stars based on around 6.300 reviews. The Essent app came out at 4,4 out of 5 stars based on around 36.000 reviews. Both apps show consumption and invoices and give advice on the instalment amount, but Vattenfall adds, among other things, comparisons with similar households and notifications of unusual consumption.

On feed-in, Vattenfall ranks higher because the feed-in charges at 1.500 kWh are lower according to the current tiers. With this calculation basis, the feed-in fee does not yet count in 2026, because with this calculation basis you feed back less than you take from the grid and can offset everything under net metering.

In terms of sustainability, both companies score well. Vattenfall's 2025 electricity label states 71,8% Dutch wind energy, 27,4% Dutch solar energy and 0,8% Dutch hydropower for consumers and SMEs. Essent also opts for renewable energy sources. Only with the Essent NV Mix is part of the electricity also supplied from natural gas. This is shown by Essent's 2025 electricity label.

Who should choose what?

You want the lowest total annual amount: Essent

Choose Essent if you mainly want to pay less. Do check carefully whether this also applies to your consumption. In addition, check how much of the advantage comes from a one-off discount, because after the first contract year that can change the outcome considerably.

You feed electricity back: Vattenfall

Choose Vattenfall if your situation matches the calculation basis. The feed-in tier is currently more favourable at Vattenfall at 1.500 kWh, while the feed-in fee has no effect yet due to full net metering. With a different feed-in, Essent may become more favourable, so keep checking the feed-in charges comparison.

You want the best-rated customer service: Essent

Choose Essent if you attach great importance to easily reachable customer service. Essent achieves the highest service score in this comparison and can be reached by phone on weekdays from 9.00 to 18.00 and on Saturdays from 9.00 to 13.00. Vattenfall can only be reached by phone on weekdays.

Switching from Essent to Vattenfall and vice versa

With an ordinary switch at the same address, the new supplier cancels your old contract. This applies both when switching from Vattenfall to Essent and when switching from Essent to Vattenfall. Vattenfall mentions an average lead time of four to six weeks. Essent usually completes the switch within six weeks. You have a fourteen-day cooling-off period after the application.

Check the end date of your contract in advance. You can terminate a variable or dynamic contract without a cancellation fee. With a running fixed contract, the supplier can multiply the remaining consumption by the difference between your contract rate and the current comparable rate. So ask for a calculation in advance, as ACM ConsuWijzer also advises.

Can I simply switch?

Yes. The new supplier arranges the switch and supply continues.
