Essent or Eneco: everything side by side
Essent and Eneco both offer fixed, variable and dynamic energy contracts. The energy tax, VAT and system operator charges make no difference for the same address and consumption. So pay particular attention to the supply rates, fixed supply charges, welcome discount and terms for solar panels at Essent and Eneco.
For solar panels, the suppliers use a different method in 2026. Essent works with feed-in tiers: your annual feed-in determines which fixed amount you pay. Eneco, on the other hand, works with a rate per kWh fed back. The Essent tiers can cause a jump around a threshold, while the costs at Eneco rise more evenly with every extra kWh. Which system is most advantageous depends on how much you feed back.
So run a simulation based on your personal data. With the calculation basis we use, in 2026 you can offset all 1.500 kWh of feed-in against your electricity consumption of 2.300 kWh under net metering. As a result, the feed-in fee does not yet affect the annual amount. The feed-in charges do. From 1 January 2027, net metering ends and you receive a fee for all electricity fed back. Then compare the fee and the charges of both suppliers again.
Both energy suppliers offer discounts for new customers. Essent deposits the energy discount into your bank account twelve months after the start of supply. Eneco processes the loyalty bonus on the annual bill. At Eneco, this bonus is not included in your actual instalment amount and it lapses if you terminate the contract early. At Essent, you only receive the discount after you have remained a customer for the required twelve months.
Scores side by side
The price score follows the total annual amount in the comparison. It takes into account not only the electricity and gas price, but also the standing charge, the feed-in charges and the current cash discount. A lower price per kWh or m³ therefore does not automatically make a supplier cheaper.
When going through the Essent or Eneco experiences, we see big differences between review platforms. Essent, for example, scores considerably higher on Kiyoh than on Trustpilot, while the relative positions for Eneco are different again.
This is partly because the platforms attract different groups of customers and do not all ask for reviews in the same way. That is why our customer score combines three different sources and we do not use a single review site as the final rating. In this way we try to include the Essent or Eneco experiences in the comparison as objectively as possible.
The apps largely offer the same basic functions. You track your consumption, view invoices and adjust your instalment amount. Essent adds a TermijnCheck, a monthly Energierapport and an estimate of consumption per appliance group. On the check date (26 August 2026), the Dutch App Store gave the Essent app 4,4 out of 5 stars. Recent reviews of the Eneco app mention both the clear consumption overview and temporary problems with missing consumption data.
In terms of service, Essent has a practical advantage if you want to call at the weekend. The Essent customer service can be reached on weekdays and on Saturday mornings. The latter is not the case with many energy suppliers. Eneco can be reached by phone on weekdays, but via the chatbot it does offer a call-back service in which you are called back within ten minutes during opening hours. This is much more convenient than waiting on the line.
As far as Dutch electricity origin is concerned, both companies score well. In 2025, both suppliers supplied private customers exclusively with renewable electricity from wind and sun. According to Eneco's electricity label, no less than 98,8 percent came from Dutch wind and solar parks. Essent's electricity label distinguishes between Wind NL, groene stroom NL and groene stroom. The first two are 100% Dutch. With Groene Stroom, 7.5% of the electricity supplied comes from the Netherlands.

Who should choose what?
You want the lowest total annual amount: Eneco
Choose the price winner if both deals have the same term and match your consumption. Do check what causes the difference, though. A high one-off discount can make the first year attractive, without the same supplier still being the cheapest after the contract ends. In that case, it is a good idea to compare again once the contract ends.
You have solar panels: Essent
With the calculation basis used, Essent is more favourable on feed-in. In 2026, all your feed-in falls within the net metering limit, which means that mainly the feed-in charges count and not the feed-in fee. Essent's tier currently works out more favourably at 1.500 kWh than Eneco's amount per kWh. Do check your own quantity carefully, because a few extra kilowatt hours fed back can put you in a higher tier at Essent. Here you can see the current feed-in charges comparison.
You want demonstrably Dutch green electricity: Eneco
Choose Eneco if Dutch electricity origin is the deciding factor for you. The electricity label for 2025 substantiates that 98,8 percent of the consumer mix came from Dutch wind and solar energy. Essent also supplies 100 percent renewable electricity. Where it comes from differs per contract type.
Switching from Essent to Eneco and vice versa
Switching from Eneco to Essent or the other way round is not difficult. That is because both energy suppliers have a switching service. The new energy supplier (Essent or Eneco) then cancels the old contract for you. Supply simply continues in the meantime.
First check in Mijn Essent or Mijn Eneco when your current contract ends. You can terminate a variable or dynamic contract without a cancellation fee. With a fixed contract, a fee may apply based on the remaining consumption and the price difference with a comparable new contract. With a fixed contract, it is therefore sometimes better to wait until the end date.
When switching from Essent to Eneco, you sign up with Eneco. When switching from Eneco to Essent, you do so with Essent. Provide the correct end date, so that the contracts follow on from each other neatly. Eneco states that it arranges the switch within five weeks. At Essent, the switch is usually completed within six weeks.
After signing up, you have a cooling-off period of fourteen calendar days. Check the term, rates, feed-in charges, cash discount and start date. Also check whether you lose a loyalty or energy discount you have not yet received by leaving early.
Frequently asked questions about Essent vs Eneco
