ANWB starts supplying gas and green electricity

BlogReading time 4 min2 topics

The future of motoring in the Netherlands is electric. After the electric bike and scooter, it is now the turn of the electric car to conquer our streets. The expectations are clear: in 2030 there should be some 1,9 million electric cars driving around in the Netherlands. And then it is not at all strange that the Royal Dutch Touring Club ANWB, which after all has a very clear focus on cars and, for example, already offers breakdown assistance, is now emerging as an energy supplier.

ANWB starts supplying gas and green electricity

With ANWB Energie, ANWB focuses on driving on green energy. That is why it supplies green electricity from Dutch wind and solar energy. Customers can also come to them for CO2-offset gas. Unlike biogas, this gas is not really green, but the CO2 emissions are offset via sustainable investments. Just as you can offset your flight, for example.

01Green energy with a dynamic electricity rate

What is special about ANWB Energie is that they supply energy at the actual cost price. This means that energy prices can differ per day and even per hour. Those who use energy at less busy times will have to pay less than those who use energy at the busiest times. This makes, for example, charging an electric car outside peak times extra attractive. For those who have a home battery, ANWB Energie is also very attractive as a result. ANWB Energie does all this via a subscription and without a profit margin on usage. Moreover, this subscription can be cancelled monthly and without penalty.

The disadvantage of a dynamic electricity rate is of course that you also have to pay more for your energy when energy prices rise. Moreover, electricity is extra expensive at busy times and you had better take that into account. With energy suppliers that offer a fixed rate, you are assured of that same rate for a longer period. You do not have this certainty with a dynamic electricity rate. It is true, however, that with fixed energy rates a safety margin is often already built in to protect against unwanted price increases.

Cheaper than a static electricity rate

In theory, the dynamic electricity rate of ANWB Energie is more attractive than the static electricity rates used by the large energy suppliers. This is mainly to do with a safety margin. ANWB Energie made the calculation itself and arrived at an average difference of €279 per year.

We do have to put this figure into perspective. ANWB Energie works without welcome discounts and energy deals. Such deals can nevertheless be very attractive. For example, Vattenfall currently offers new customers who choose one year of fixed prices a bol.com gift voucher of €300. This more than compensates for the price difference of €279 claimed by ANWB Energie. It is once again proof of how difficult comparing on the energy market is.

02Frequently asked questions about energy from ANWB Energie

When a new energy supplier enters the market, it is important to gather sufficient information. It is never advisable to switch uninformed. It is for this reason that we answer a number of frequently asked questions about ANWB Energie.

In practice, ANWB Energie is a project that is being rolled out in cooperation with EnergyZero. EnergyZero offers companies the option of offering energy via their own energy brand. EnergyZero also offers the necessary knowledge and software to make all this happen. Countless other companies already offer the energy of EnergyZero in this way, such as Mijndomein Energie and Independer. In other words, ANWB Energie is not the one that generates and supplies the energy, but is merely a reseller. It is EnergyZero that holds the required ACM licence. ANWB Energie has, however, made agreements with EnergyZero, for example about providing a reliable service.

Does ANWB Energie supply the energy itself?

Although ANWB Energie clearly focuses on the electric driver in its communication, their subscription is there for everyone. Including those who do not have an electric car. It is true, however, that electric drivers can achieve the greatest saving. After all, they can charge smartly and fill up on energy at the moments that are most advantageous for them.

Is ANWB Energie only for those who have an electric car?

ANWB Energie passes on the prices that are paid when purchasing on the wholesale market. For gas, these prices are set daily and for electricity, this is set per hour. During peak hours you therefore pay more for your electricity than during off-peak hours. This does not mean that you will be surprised every month by a different energy bill. In practice, an estimate is simply made and a monthly amount is set. The difference is then settled at the end of the year. In the meantime, you can always view the actual consumption via the app and, if necessary, you can also adjust the monthly amount.

How do the variable energy rates work?

ANWB offers a subscription service with a fixed contribution of €6 per month per energy product. If you take gas and electricity, you therefore pay €12 per month for the fixed supply charges. This comes on top of the energy at cost price.

How can ANWB make money if they supply energy at cost price?

No, these switching penalties are at your own expense. So check carefully when you can switch without a penalty. Always choose a suitable start date when you sign up with ANWB Energie.
