The Toon thermostat is being discontinued: what is the alternative in 2026?

By Laurens Arends · updated 05-10-2026

Eneco no longer sells the Toon thermostat. According to reporting by Pricewise on Eneco's customer communication, online support will end in early 2027. So the Toon thermostat is not being discontinued completely. Toon is expected to remain usable as an ordinary wall thermostat after that. If you currently still use the app, consumption insights or smart integrations, export your data in good time.

Toon thermostat is being discontinued: what does that mean exactly?

On the official Toon page, Eneco confirms that the Toon thermostat is no longer sold. The company now offers a new Eneco Slimme Thermostaat. According to Pricewise, which refers to an announcement by Eneco to its customers, Eneco will also stop online support for Toon in early 2027.

The Toon thermostat will not stop working then; the screen will not suddenly go dead. According to our information, the Toon thermostat will remain usable locally to control the heating. Online functions may, however, disappear. Think of control via the app, up-to-date consumption information, software updates and integrations with smart devices.

On 8 September 2026, Eneco's public website had not yet been fully updated. The support pages and the Toon subscription are still available, while according to Pricewise Eneco had already informed customers about the end of online support in 2027.

What did the Toon thermostat do well?

Toon combined three functions in one screen: controlling the heating, viewing energy consumption and operating smart devices. The clear wall display was an important advantage here. You didn't have to open a phone to see how much gas and electricity you were using.

With an active subscription, you could operate Toon remotely, set weekly programmes and view current consumption in euros. Toon could also work together with certain smart plugs en smart lamps. That made the system attractive for households that wanted to combine comfort and insight into consumption.

The central heating boiler is controlled via a boiler module. According to Eneco, Toon supports both OpenTherm and on/off control. For energy consumption, Toon uses a connection with the smart meter or a separate metering module.

However, Toon is primarily a central room thermostat. The system does not offer the same extensive zone control as systems with their own smart radiator knobs. You also need to have compatibility checked again if you have a different central heating boiler, a hybrid heat pump or fully electric heating.

Saving energy with the Toon thermostat

CBS and PBL estimate an average consumption of 928 m³ gas and 1.747 kWh electricity for 2026. We calculate with approximately € 1,31 per m³ of gas saved and € 0,26 per kWh of electricity saved. Fixed supply charges and grid operator charges do not fall when you use less.

A 2015 study by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam estimated the annual saving at 5,1% to 6,1% of gas consumption and 2,6% to 3,2% of electricity consumption. For our worked example we use the rounded midpoints of 5,5% and 2,9%. Applied to the average consumption for 2026, this gives the following calculation:

928 m³ × 5,5% = 51 m³ gas saving, worth approximately € 67;

1.747 kWh × 2,9% = 51 kWh electricity saving, worth approximately € 13.

In the scenario from the VU study, an average household therefore saves about € 80 gross per year. This outcome has not been fully proven to be causal. The researchers compared households that bought Toon with non-users. Toon buyers may already have been more conscious of energy beforehand. Because of this possible self-selection, it cannot be established what part of the measured saving was actually caused by Toon.

In 2014 Eneco reported that, according to their annual bills, Toon users had started using about 10% less energy. If we apply this 10% to both gas and electricity, we save 93 m³ gas and 175 kWh electricity. At 2026 price levels, that represents about € 122 in gas and € 45 in electricity, together € 167 gross per year. Here too, it is not clear whether the saving can be fully attributed to the Toon thermostat.

The Toon thermostat is no longer sold. It used to cost € 200, plus € 75 in installation costs. The total investment was therefore € 275. For existing users, Eneco still listed a subscription price of € 4,50 per month on 8 September 2026, or € 54 per year.

After deducting the subscription, the following annual amounts remain:

VU scenario: € 80 saving minus € 54 subscription = € 26 net per year;

Eneco scenario: € 167 saving minus € 54 subscription = € 113 net per year.

Based on this annual net saving, the simple payback period of the original investment of € 275 was about 10,6 years in the VU scenario and 2,4 years according to Eneco's claim. Any repairs and Toon's own electricity consumption have not been included.

To illustrate the theoretical return up to the end of online support, we take someone who bought Toon at the beginning of 2015 and used the system up to and including 2026. For all twelve years we calculate with the energy prices and subscription price of 2026 and with € 275 in purchase and installation costs. The total return is calculated as: (gross saving − total costs) ÷ total costs × 100%.

In the VU scenario, the gross saving over twelve years is 12 × € 80 = € 960. From this, € 275 in purchase and installation costs and 12 × € 54 = € 648 in subscription costs are deducted. The total costs therefore come to € 923 and the net result is only € 37 positive. The total return is approximately 4%.

According to Eneco's claim, the gross saving is 12 × € 167 = € 2.004. After deducting the same € 923 in purchase, installation and subscription costs, € 1.081 net remains. The total return is then approximately 117%. That is a big difference from the outcome of the VU study.

Above all, this calculation shows how strongly the outcome depends on the assumed energy saving. Based on the VU study, Toon only just paid for itself over twelve years. According to Eneco's higher claim, the investment was comfortably profitable, but the evidence for that claim is considerably weaker. This is, however, a theoretical comparison at 2026 price levels. Actual energy prices and subscription costs were different in earlier years. Also, not every user bought Toon in 2015.

Toon thermostat: alternative for when the Toon thermostat is discontinued

Do you mainly want to keep using the smart functions? Then there is no option other than choosing an alternative when the Toon thermostat is discontinued.

AlternativeCosts in September 2026SubscriptionParticularly suitable for
Eneco Slimme Thermostaat€ 159€ 3,90 per month for app controlEneco customers with a gas-fired central heating boiler and a wired OpenTherm or on/off thermostat

Homey Pro (smart home platform without thermostat)€ 449, excluding thermostatNo mandatory basic subscriptionExtensive automation with devices from different brands

The new Eneco thermostat is the most obvious successor if you want to stay with Eneco. According to the current terms and conditions, it is only intended for a gas-fired central heating boiler and requires, among other things, a wired thermostat connection and wifi at the boiler. The tado° smart thermostat is interesting if you want to control rooms separately. Homey Pro is not a thermostat, but a platform to which you still need to connect a suitable thermostat or boiler controller.

Using Toon without a subscription

According to Eneco, Toon works as an ordinary thermostat without a subscription. So even when support for the Toon thermostat stops, you can continue to use the device. You can then still adjust the temperature on the wall display. So you can use Toon without a subscription, but then you lose the smart functions for which you may have bought it.

You no longer have control via the Toon app and no up-to-date insight into consumption and costs. Various integrations with smart devices are also no longer available. As a result, mainly the local thermostat function remains. Toon can also be used if you do not have an energy contract with Eneco. With a subscription, Toon then uses an average supply rate. The costs shown may therefore differ from your actual contract.

Toon thermostat stops or freezes: what can you do?

Support for the Toon thermostat is ending. As long as support is available, you can contact customer service if you have problems. After support ends, you will have to rely on an installer for hardware and heating problems or manage on your own. Is Toon not responding or does the screen stay black? First check whether the screen is properly seated on the wall plate. Then press the reset button on the underside.

According to Eneco, an A01 or A02 code indicates a communication problem between Toon, the boiler module and the central heating boiler. A B00 or B01 code relates to the connection with the metering module. With an A01 or A02 code, Eneco advises disconnecting the boiler module from the power for thirty seconds. A B00 or B01 code indicates a problem with the metering module; unplug it from the socket for thirty seconds and then check the connection. Do not simply perform a factory reset, because certain older software versions cannot then be reactivated.

Do you still have Toon on the wall?

First download your energy data. On Toon, go to Menu > Instellingen > Internet > Toon data > Maak kopie. Then open the displayed download link on a device within the same network. You will receive the data as CSV files. Also take photos of the wiring and note which boiler module and metering module are installed. If in doubt, have components removed by an installer. Only then choose an alternative, once compatibility with your boiler, heat pump, smart meter and any radiator knobs has also been checked.
