Review: the smart thermostat from momit
The smart thermostat from momit has a pleasant price tag, or at least in comparison with the price of other smart thermostats that also push paid subscriptions on you. Nevertheless, the possibilities of momit go far and there are certainly a number of plus points to mention. The ability to manage several homes with one app and the far-reaching smart functionalities are examples of this. You do have to like the design, and you should also know that with this smart thermostat you cannot control the hot water system.

Disadvantages
Although we had no trouble with it, there are quite a few users who report wifi problems.
The cables for connecting to the central heating boiler are not supplied and you have to provide them yourself.
It is not possible to also control the hot water system with this smart thermostat.
The housing feels a little fragile and not everyone will find the unique design equally attractive.
The smart thermostat eats energy. AA batteries are supplied, but they have to be replaced quickly.
Advantages
The momit thermostat is an affordable choice where you do not have to deal with subscription costs.
This smart thermostat is available in different colours. This lets you match it better to your interior.
The thermostat works wirelessly, so you are not limited to a fixed spot on the wall.
The app is very user-friendly and is available for Android, Apple and BlackBerry.
The smart functionalities go far and do not come at the expense of the manual control options.
01Review: conclusion on the momit thermostat
The smart thermostat from momit can be used with any central heating boiler. For example, it is possible to create different schedules. On the basis of the weekly weather forecast, you know exactly when the heating will or will not come on. With this smart thermometer you can save as much as thirty percent energy. Furthermore, the purchase costs of just over 100 euros are also quite reasonable.
02Full review of momit
The intelligent thermostat from momit is wireless, so it can easily be moved to another corner of the room. So you do not have a thermostat that is screwed to a central spot, and you keep the freedom to arrange your interior differently. This is a plus point compared with other smart thermostats. The condition for this, however, is that you use the MHEKV1 extension kit. On the other hand, there is an important downside: in practice, the momit seems to drain the AA batteries quite quickly.
Just as you can easily move the momit, the installation of the momit also goes smoothly. This does not mean, however, that you have to sacrifice possibilities, because in this respect the manufacturer goes very far. For example, you can program room by room and the system is intelligent enough to switch off the heating when nobody is at home.
One of the strong points of momit is certainly the purchase price, which is low compared with competitors. Nor do you have to deal with recurring subscription costs, while it is still a good smart thermostat that offers many possibilities. On the other hand, you have to buy all kinds of extras, such as the previously mentioned MHEKV1 extension kit. The cables for connecting to your central heating boiler are not supplied either. The manufacturer apparently assumes that you already have them or thinks you should just go to the DIY store. On the other hand, the required AA batteries are supplied as standard.
It is good to know that, in addition to controlling the temperature, you can also control, for example, air conditioners that both cool and heat. What is not possible, however, and this is quite a downside compared with, for example, the Hive thermostat, is controlling the hot water system. A number of other good functionalities that we know from other thermostats do return. One example is the Smart Mode, which is strongly reminiscent of the intelligent Nest functions. In this mode, your smart thermostat learns when you manually raise or lower the temperature and suggests new settings on that basis. Handy!
Registration and first use
To be able to use all the functionalities, it is necessary to register with momit. This is possible from the app. For this, a number of personal details must be provided, such as the name, the language and so on. In addition, it is necessary to provide the details of the boiler, the floor area, the address of the home and similar data. Momit needs this data to guarantee proper operation. The address is used for geofencing, for example, but also to retrieve local weather data. In our view this registration process runs very smoothly, and that is a plus point.
After installing the app and configuring various devices in your smart home, which in practice is done via the handy Start Assistant, a number of handy things can still be configured. Geofencing can be switched on or off and you can indicate when you get up, come home, are at work, go to sleep and so on. The smart thermostat also uses this information to ensure optimal operation. It already shows the far-reaching intelligence of this thermostat, but you do sacrifice a little privacy for it.
Momit app
As soon as the assistant has been configured, you can get started with the momit app. In our view this app is clearly designed. On the home screen you immediately see all registered devices, each with its own ambient temperature. You also immediately see the status of the device. By tapping on a device, you can adjust a few things. Everything is neatly displayed in Dutch and provided with icons that make it extra easy to understand. By clicking on the calendar icon, for example, a calendar setting can be programmed.
In the submenu, more options can be found. Here, for example, a new device or a new user can be added. The average temperature and the average humidity are also shown here. It is also possible, for example, to read the weather. Of course there are also other applications for that, which are probably somewhat handier to use. Up to this point, everything is in any case very clear.
When the configurations are tinkered with, it does become somewhat more complex for most people. For example, it is possible to program the hysteresis between 0.3º and 1.9º, a temperature compensation can be applied, and so on. It shows how far you can go in adjusting and programming your smart thermostat.
The smart thermostat put to the test
Of course it is not only about the app, and we also take a close look at the smart thermostat. We think the smart thermostat looks a bit too square, but that is of course personal and there are more than enough people who find exactly that modern and stylish. Moreover, you have a choice of different colours, so there is a suitable model for every interior. This too is a plus point compared with other smart thermostats, which often impose a single, sometimes somewhat futuristic design.
The smart momit thermostat has a large and bright screen, although the housing feels somewhat fragile and the system also eats batteries. Thanks to the many possibilities, here too you can enter your work rhythm or adjust the temperature.
Furthermore, the manufacturer states that you can save up to 30% with this smart thermostat, but in practice that of course depends on various factors. A substantial saving of up to 20% is, however, very realistic for the average Dutch person. Especially the integration of the MyBudget function, with which you program a monthly energy budget, is an important plus point in this respect.
03Connecting the gateway
First of all, it is necessary to connect the gateway. To connect the gateway, the power supply must first be connected. For this, you connect the USB cable. Then you need to connect the gateway to the router via the ethernet cable. Once the three status LEDs start to light up, the connection has succeeded.
04Installing the thermostat
Now remove the connection plate that you find on the back of the thermostat and pass the connection wires through the opening in this plate. Screw the connection plate to the wall and connect the wires according to the wiring diagram in the installation manual. Now insert the two AA batteries and attach the thermostat housing to the mounted connection plate. Then switch on the thermostat and let it synchronise with the gateway. This takes a maximum of one minute. When the connection LED lights up, both devices are connected to each other.
05Fitting the extension kit
Now the extension kit can also be fitted. For this, installation wires again need to be provided. The installation wires can be connected both when they come out of the wall and when they come out of the heating. There are two openings provided for this. Consult the wiring diagram again to check how the various wires are to be connected. At the end, the power wires can be connected, but of course first switch off the power beforehand until the installation is fully completed.
06Configuring momit
Finally, it is necessary to create an account with momit and provide a number of personal details. Now the three devices can also be added to the Start Assistant. For this, it is necessary to enter the serial number or scan the QR code. Go through the various steps of the Start Assistant and decide on a number of configurations yourself. Do you want to use geolocation or not? How are you going to set up the calendar? And are you going to configure different devices in your home differently? You decide it entirely yourself.
07How do you install momit?
The smart system momit Home consists of a smart thermostat and a gateway, optionally supplemented with the separately available extension kit. The gateway is connected to the internet via the router and is the communication channel between the app, the smart thermostat and other momit devices. The thermostat, in turn, is used to control the boiler and thus also the temperature. The extension kit, in turn, is used to switch the heating wirelessly.
08Frequently asked questions about momit
The momit Home thermostat is a smart thermostat with many possibilities and an attractive price tag. As standard it is supplied without an extension kit, but we definitely recommend this kit. In addition, there are a few more things you should know about this smart thermostat. In this FAQ you will find a number of important answers.
From three similar manual adjustments, momit notices this. If, for example, the temperature is adjusted from 21°C to 19°C every Friday evening at 19:00, the smart thermostat will adjust the schedule and adopt this. This smart function can, however, be switched off if desired.
How quickly does momit draw conclusions from manual adjustments?
The thermostat has sensors that check whether anyone is present, even when no geolocation is used. When the smart thermostat does not detect anyone present, it switches off the heating until further notice. This function can be switched off and the associated time intervals are fully adjustable. In addition, the app can display how long ago presence was detected in the home.
What does the presence detection function involve?
Yes. You then set until when you are on holiday. You can then also choose whether momit switches to the pre-programmed calendar from your return home or has to be switched on again manually.
Does momit have a holiday mode?
This allows the temperature of the thermostat to be adjusted. When a device is near, for example, a terrarium, it may indicate a temperature that is somewhat warmer than the actual temperature in the room. This can be compensated via the settings so that the influence of the source of interference is eliminated. This is also possible when there are cold sources of interference, for example due to a draught coming under a door.
What does the temperature compensation setting involve?
This is a margin setting that prevents the heating from constantly having to switch on and off, which wastes a lot of energy. If, for example, a hysteresis of 0,8º is set and the temperature is programmed to 20°C, the heating will switch off at a temperature of 20,8°C and only come on again at a temperature of 19,2°C.
What is the hysteresis adjustment setting?
Yes, via the submenu you can see all the homes you have registered. By clicking on one of the homes, you can see all the data and devices. This makes this thermostat ideal for those who also want a smart thermostat in their holiday home, for example.
Can I use the app for several homes?
Yes. Per home it is possible to create different calendars, as well as use a holiday mode. Each calendar gets its own name and can be fully adjusted as desired. For example, you create a programme for wintry weekdays, summery weekends and so on.
Can I program several calendars?
Momit has its own help function where information can be found, but we find it rather useless. You will find questions and answers there such as “what is momit Home” and “what is a gateway”. The manufacturer could safely have assumed that you knew what you were buying. If there really is a problem, we therefore recommend contacting an installer. If there is a problem with the thermostat and it is still within the warranty period, you of course contact the seller.
What if I need help with my momit?
First remove the cover and insert a pen into the small hole you see under the batteries. By applying a little pressure, the front housing will come loose. Pull it off and then you can detach the frame. Now fit the new frame and close everything up again.
How do I change the frame of my momit Home thermostat?
In addition to your thermostat, you also receive a power adapter, an ethernet and USB cable, 2 AA batteries and the required screws and wall plugs. In other words, installation wires and the extension kit are not supplied as standard.
