Arranging gas and electricity in 2026
You can easily compare and apply for gas and light online. By ‘light’ we mean electricity or power. Gas and light is therefore a traditional name for gas and electricity. It is used so often that the well-known comparison site Gaslicht.com (“gasenlicht”) took its name from it. Just like at Gaslicht.com, you can also apply for and compare gas and light here.
Since the full opening of the Dutch energy market on 1 July 2004, you may choose your own energy supplier. Your regional grid operator stays the same. You do not have to take gas and electricity from the same supplier, but many people do. A combined contract for gas and electricity is clearer. However, two separate contracts for gas and electricity are sometimes cheaper.
If you want to know what one cubic metre of gas costs, take a look at the current gas price. On the page with energy prices you can follow the development of electricity and gas. The current promotions can be found on the energy deals.
Comparing gas and electricity
You always compare gas and electricity on the basis of your own annual consumption. So get your latest annual bill. Also enter how much solar electricity you feed back. Then compare the total expected annual amount and not just the rate per kWh or m³. Fixed supply charges, energy tax, grid operator charges, feed-in charges and discounts can completely change the outcome. That is why we always take the overall picture into account.
Also pay attention to the type of contract. A fixed contract offers temporary certainty about the supply rates. With a variable contract, the supplier can adjust the rates during the contract, at the agreed times. A dynamic contract follows the market price per quarter of an hour or hour for electricity and per day for gas. Also check the term, cancellation rules, origin of the electricity and customer service.
According to ACM ConsuWijzer (2026), deals may differ per comparison site and per day. The regulator therefore advises looking at more than one comparison site. Do you use the Gaslicht.com website to make the comparison?
Then it is a good idea to also compare gas and electricity on Energieaanbieding.nl. We transparently use the data we have obtained from the energy supplier. We then refer you to the website of the energy supplier itself. There, the supplier will show a tailored offer with all costs and an estimate of the annual amount. That way you can compare gas and electricity on the basis of the same data.
Applying for gas and electricity in three steps
Write down your postcode, house number and the end date of your contract. Copy the annual consumption of gas and electricity from your annual bill. If you have solar panels, also enter your annual feed-in.
Compare the estimated annual costs, contract duration and terms. Check whether a discount is already included in the annual amount and when you receive it. With solar panels, look separately at the feed-in charges and feed-in fee.
Want to apply for gas and electricity? Then enter your personal details and payment details with the chosen provider. You then receive the contract confirmation, rates, terms and start date. In a normal switch, the new supplier arranges the termination of the old contract. For an energy contract concluded online, a fourteen-day cooling-off period applies in principle.
What is Gaslicht.com?
Gaslicht.com is a commercial energy comparison site of the Bencom Group of internet entrepreneur Ben Woldring. The name is a reference to gas and light. The website was launched on 19 June 2003, shortly before the full liberalisation of the energy market. Ben Woldring was already known at the time for Bellen.com, which started in 1998 as a school assignment on telephone rates.
The current scope is broader than just comparing gas and electricity for households. You can also look at contracts for electricity only or gas only, compare business energy, find solar panels and compare home batteries.
The gas and electricity comparison site incorporates contract duration, type of rate, sustainability, reviews and solar panels in the results. Gaslicht.com is not an energy supplier itself. After the application, you conclude the contract with the chosen supplier and that supplier is your point of contact. Gaslicht.com therefore works in the same way as Energieaanbieding.nl.
Is Gaslicht.com independent and reliable?
On its information page about how it works, Gaslicht.com makes clear who is behind the site and how the ranking and income work. According to Gaslicht.com, suppliers do not pay to be included in the overview. The comparison site does receive a one-off fee when someone switches via the site.
Gaslicht.com states that this fee is the same for every supplier and that deals that cannot be concluded via the site are also shown. On this point too, Energieaanbieding.nl and Gaslicht.com do not differ that much. The biggest difference is that we have a strong focus on energy deals and how you can benefit from them to pay even less for gas and electricity.
Based on our research, we can state that Gaslicht.com, like us, is independent and reliable. This is not necessarily the case for other energy comparison sites. They sometimes only show the results of companies that pay for this. Unfortunately, there is no quality mark indicating that a comparison site is complete. Do you use an energy comparison site other than Energieaanbieding.nl or Gaslicht.com? Then check carefully whether your personal situation has been processed correctly, how the ranking is determined and how complete the range is.
Frequently asked questions about comparing gas and electricity
Can I apply for gas and electricity with different suppliers?
Yes. According to ACM ConsuWijzer, you may purchase gas and electricity separately. You then get two contracts and possibly also two instalment amounts and bills.
Can I apply for gas and electricity if I am moving house?
Yes. Preferably apply for the contract before the handover of the keys and write down the meter readings on moving day. First check whether your existing contract moves with you or ends and whether stopping early could result in a cancellation fee.
What is the difference between Gaslicht.com and EnergieAanbieding.nl?
Both websites help you compare gas and electricity, but the way they work differs. At Gaslicht.com, you can apply for the switch via the comparison site, after which Gaslicht.com passes the application on to the supplier. EnergieAanbieding.nl puts more emphasis on deals, background information and direct referral to the supplier's offer.
What do gas, electricity and water cost per month?
According to CBS and PBL (2026), gas and electricity cost an average household about € 1.993 per year in January 2026, or € 166 per month.
For a two-person household with about 95 m³ of water consumption, about € 21,50 per month is added on the basis of the average Vewin rate of € 2,71 per m³ in 2026. Together that is indicatively about € 188 per month. The actual amount depends heavily on the home, the consumption, solar panels, the energy contract and the regional water company. Sewerage charges and water board tax are not included in this amount.
When should I arrange gas, water and electricity?
Arrange gas and electricity as soon as the start date or moving date is known. According to ACM ConsuWijzer (2026), you must notify your energy supplier of a move at least two weeks in advance. You apply for water separately with the fixed drinking water company in your region. With a running fixed energy contract, first check whether the contract moves with you and whether cancelling early incurs costs.
When do I get money back for gas, water and electricity?
You get money back if the instalments you paid were higher than your actual costs. The energy supplier calculates this on the annual bill or, after a move or switch, on the final bill. The water company draws up a separate bill for drinking water. When the amount is paid out is stated on the bill or in the supplier's payment terms.
Is Gaslicht.com independent?
Gaslicht.com is a commercial comparison site, but states that it ranks its results independently. According to Gaslicht.com, suppliers have no say in the comparison, the website receives the same fee for every successful switch and deals that cannot be concluded are also shown.
Why is Gaslicht.com cheaper than the price I see elsewhere?
A deal via Gaslicht.com can be cheaper due to a temporary or channel-specific discount from the energy supplier. That advantage is not guaranteed. A price difference can also arise from a different reference date, a different annual consumption, solar panels, feed-in charges or the way in which a discount has been processed in the annual amount.
Is Gaslicht.com free?
Yes, visitors pay nothing for the comparison or the switching service. That is also the case at Energieaanbieding.nl. Gaslicht.com earns money from a one-off fee from the energy supplier when someone switches via the website. So free for the consumer does not mean that the comparison site receives no income.
Who is the owner of Gaslicht.com?
Gaslicht.com is operated by Benergy B.V., part of the Bencom Group. The Bencom Group was founded by internet entrepreneur Ben Woldring.
When should I arrange gas, water and electricity for a new home?
Preferably apply for gas and electricity at least two weeks in advance. In addition, register separately with the drinking water company of the region.
How can I arrange gas, water and electricity?
For gas and electricity, you first compare energy contracts with your postcode, house number, annual consumption and any feed-in. Then you apply for the chosen contract with the energy supplier and provide the desired start date. You do not arrange water via an energy comparison site, but directly with the regional drinking water company. You cannot choose your water supplier yourself.
Have gas and electricity become more expensive?
According to CBS and PBL (2026), the calculated average energy bill fell from € 2.046 in January 2025 to € 1.993 in January 2026, a decrease of 2,5%. Of this, € 47 was due to a lower expected consumption and only € 5 due to price changes. Gas became slightly more expensive on average due to taxes, standing charge and grid management, while electricity became cheaper.
