Stopping with heating: the gas tap is being turned off

Residents of Groningen and Drenthe know it and complain bitterly. Due to the intensive gas extraction in their province, the ground literally shakes. While Dutch households use gas all year round to heat their homes, people in the gas extraction area suffer enormously. That is the reason why the government has decided to turn off the gas tap. Gradually more and more houses in our country are being disconnected from the natural gas grid. Homes and residential areas are being completed that are no longer connected to the gas grid; alternative sources of energy are being sought. Those alternative sources seem closer than you might think.

01Heating with the sun

The most important method of generating heat for a house is, for the time being, the solar water heater. It uses an ingenious system in which the sun provides energy to heat your house. Gas is no longer needed. Anyone who is afraid of sitting in the cold on a day with hardly any sunshine is fortunately mistaken. Solar panels do not only work on sun; daylight in itself is enough to make them function well. Since the sun shines for free for everyone, this is the method that pays for itself fastest.

Heat from the air

Another way to generate heat without using gas is via the outside air. There are heat pumps that draw in the outside air via a heat exchanger and work along a heat exchanger. After that the air is warm enough to be blown through your house. You have thus created a kind of reverse air conditioner in your house, giving off heat extracted from the outside air. Another way of using the outside air is via a heat pump that heats outside air, after which a boiler is controlled. This system can be used to provide your house with warm radiators, but it can also be used to get hot tap water out of the tap.

There is heat in the ground

The ground is a place where it is quite warm. Anyone who drills a well between 10 and 20 metres deep reaches an area where the temperature is fairly stable at around 15 degrees. When antifreeze at the temperature of the ground is pumped up from that point, this liquid only needs to be heated a tiny bit more to provide the whole house with heat. It goes without saying that this installation, but also the methods mentioned earlier, are a considerable investment. To get off natural gas you simply have to invest heavily first. However, you earn the investment back within a period of between 5 and 10 years.
