A heat pump falls short in several respects

The advantages associated with installing a heat pump speak for themselves. However, many people do not stop to think about the disadvantages associated with such an installation. Yet these disadvantages certainly exist too. People who plan to have a heat pump installed need not put their idea on ice straight away, but it is worth taking into account the disadvantages indicated below.

A heat pump falls short in several respects

011.) A heat pump is not cheap

In the first place, the purchase of a heat pump can easily be (much) more expensive than initially expected. In practice, it is and remains a fairly large investment that can usually only be recouped in the long run. The price of a heat pump is even higher than a traditional central heating boiler. So do take into account that sufficient budget is always available to be able to pay for this investment. On the other hand, a heat pump will certainly pay for itself over the medium to long term. The cost price of a heat pump can always be reduced by carrying out an objective comparison between different companies that sell heat pumps.

022.) Heat pumps work at low temperatures

When we compare the temperatures of heat pumps with those of traditional heating, they are always quite a bit lower. The direct consequence of this is that the dimensions (or the so-called surface area) of the radiators or the underfloor heating must also be larger. Only in this way is it possible to still achieve a lovely indoor climate. Moreover, bear in mind that heating up with a heat pump also takes longer. This can possibly be solved by installing radiators fitted with a built-in fan. Precisely because the temperatures with a heat pump are lower, it is also important that this system is used in houses that are well insulated. Only in this way is it possible to limit heat loss. In poorly insulated homes, the efficiency of the heat pump is considerably more limited.

033.) A permit is sometimes required for heat pumps

It is always important to bear in mind that there is a chance that a permit has to be applied for to install a heat pump. This applies in particular to a so-called ‘open installation’. It is strongly recommended to check this with the municipality in advance. Having to apply for a permit can not only entail extra costs, it also takes some time. It is therefore important to give this some thought.

044.) Possible additional disadvantages of heat pumps

Despite the fact that the systems have already improved considerably, it is still the case that many heat pump systems still take up a great deal more space compared with a classic central heating boiler. Moreover, it is also important to bear in mind that drilling sometimes has to be carried out. Not only does this require the necessary attention, but what about the return well as well as the sealing? In addition, the required drilling is not simply possible at every location. So it should be clear: do you want to save energy by installing a heat pump? Then do not overlook the potential disadvantages!
