Expert review of Zonneplan
Our score 6,1, 12th of 20 suppliers
Zonneplan is a good choice if you want to combine energy, solar panels, a charging point and a home battery in one digital system. The app is extensive, the dynamic pricing model is transparent and the Zonnebonus is more attractive than the bare market price alone. The downside is that the electricity price is not fixed and that for the smartest product features you depend heavily on the Zonneplan app, the data connection and control. The Zonneplan home battery can technically also be used with another supplier, but the separate Powerplay payment then lapses. Also, according to the electricity label, Zonneplan does not supply certified green electricity. For many people that is still a deal-breaker.

All Zonneplan rates today
The current Zonneplan rates are on this page. These are dynamic energy contracts, which makes it harder to estimate in advance how much the energy will cost you per year. With a dynamic contract, in any case do not look only at the current quarter-hour price. Also include the fixed supply charges, purchasing fee, energy tax, VAT and grid operator charges. Moreover, the market price can rise sharply or even become temporarily negative.
Zonneplan: feed-in charges and feed-in compensation
Zonneplan does not work with feed-in tiers or a fixed amount for solar panels. According to the contract, you do not pay separate Zonneplan feed-in charges. For electricity fed back, you get the market price of the relevant quarter-hour plus the Zonnebonus.
The Zonnebonus terms give you a purchasing fee of € 0,02 per kWh on top of the market price. During the day, a 10% bonus is added when the market price including that € 0,02 is positive. The bonus applies up to 7.500 kWh of feed-in per calendar year. For electricity fed back from a Zonneplan home battery, the Powerplay rates apply and not the Zonnebonus.
The fact that Zonneplan does not charge feed-in charges does not mean that every kWh fed back earns money. With a strongly negative market price, the value can still be negative after the extra € 0,02. The 10% bonus does not apply then. So always compare the full picture (including the feed-in charges and feed-in compensation ) with that of other suppliers.
Up to and including 31 December 2026, Zonneplan nets the energy tax and purchasing fee on an annual basis. The market value of consumption and feed-in can differ, however. This is because solar power often goes to the grid during cheap afternoon quarter-hours, while in the evening you draw electricity at a higher price. From 1 January 2027, net metering ends and you get the market price and Zonnebonus for all electricity fed back.

What customers think of Zonneplan
Zonneplan gets a score of 6,1 from us, based on the points below
What customers think of Zonneplan
Recent Zonneplan reviews mainly mention the clear app, easy switching and neat installation of solar panels and home batteries. Combining your own generation, charging and battery control is also regularly appreciated. Negative Zonneplan experiences often concern slow follow-up on technical faults, differences between the expected and actual battery yield, and lack of clarity about features that require a Zonneplan Energie contract. On Trustpilot, for example, a customer reported in August 2026 that only after the purchase had they understood that certain smart charging features were linked to the energy contract. That is a good reason to have it confirmed in writing before purchase which features keep working without an energy contract.
The Zonneplan app is rated well. On 31 August 2026, the Zonneplan app had 4,6 out of 5 stars in the Dutch Apple App Store from about 12.000 ratings. On Google Play it was 4,5 out of 5 stars from more than 2.700 ratings. On the date checked, the Google Play page listed more than 100.000 downloads.
Is Zonneplan cheap?
Zonneplan can be cheap, especially if you can shift your electricity consumption to favourable quarter-hours or have solar panels and benefit from the Zonnebonus. However, it is not automatically the cheapest choice: with dynamic suppliers the market price is the same, and the difference is mainly determined by the purchasing fee, fixed supply charges, the times you consume and your gas consumption.
Is Zonneplan reliable?
Yes, Zonneplan is a reliable Dutch energy supplier. Zonneplan Energie B.V. has held ACM licences for the supply of electricity and gas to small consumers since August 2020, while the brand has been active since 2012. Customers are often positive about the app, the switch and the installation.
Is Zonneplan sustainable?
Yes and no. Zonneplan sells solar panels, charging points and home batteries and encourages customers to use electricity when a lot of wind and solar energy is available on the grid. However, according to the electricity label for 2025, the energy contract itself does not supply certified green electricity, because Zonneplan does not buy Guarantees of Origin.
Does Zonneplan have a good app?
Yes, the Zonneplan app is extensive and is one of the strongest parts of the offering. Among other things, you can see the current quarter-hour prices, electricity and gas consumption, feed-in, costs, solar panels, charging point and home battery in one environment. With the Zonneplan Connect energy meter you also get near-instant insight via its own 4G connection.
How do I switch to Zonneplan?
You apply for the dynamic contract online at Zonneplan. With a regular switch at the same address, Zonneplan normally arranges the termination with your old supplier. A smart meter that can be read remotely is mandatory.

Pros and cons of Zonneplan
Advantages
No fixed feed-in charges or feed-in tiers with the dynamic energy contract.
The market price for feed-in is supplemented with € 0,02 per kWh and, when the conditions are met, with the Zonnebonus of 10%.
Extensive app with energy prices, consumption, feed-in and linked solar panels, charging point and home battery.
The Zonneplan Connect gives near-live insight via its own 4G connection and does not depend on the Wi-Fi in your home.
Energy, solar panels, charging point and home battery can be managed within one digital system.
Disadvantages
Zonneplan only offers a dynamic contract (so the electricity and gas prices are not fixed).
According to the electricity label for 2025, the electricity supplied was not certified green and consisted of 100% natural gas.
With a strongly negative market price, feeding back can still cost money despite the extra € 0,02 per kWh.
The smartest features depend on Zonneplan's systems, data connection and product compatibility.
The borrowed Zonneplan Connect must be returned in good time after termination, otherwise Zonneplan may charge € 99.

About Zonneplan
Zonneplan started in 2012 as a solar panel company. According to the Trade Register, the current legal entity Zonneplan B.V. was founded on 14 January 2013. By its own account, the company has since fitted more than 150.000 homes with solar panels. Zonneplan Energie B.V. was founded in March 2020. The ACM granted this company licences in August 2020 for the supply of electricity and gas to small consumers. The regular energy offering consists exclusively of a dynamic energy contract. The electricity price follows the EPEX Day-Ahead market per quarter-hour. For gas, a daily price applies. In addition, you pay fixed supply charges and purchasing fees. A working smart meter that can be read remotely is mandatory. According to the Zonneplan Energie product terms (version of 1 January 2026), the contract has no fixed end date or cancellation fee. The contractual notice period is five working days.
The Zonneplan app and energy meter
The Zonneplan app is central to this energy supplier. In it you can see the current quarter-hour prices, your electricity and gas consumption, feed-in, average rates and costs per day, month or year. If you have solar panels, a charging point or a home battery through Zonneplan, the generation, charging status and grid earnings also appear in the same app. With an energy contract you get the Zonneplan Connect on loan. This energy meter plugs into the P1 port of your smart meter and sends data via its own 4G connection. So you do not depend on your Wi-Fi. According to the product terms, you must return the Connect within four weeks after the end of your contract. If you do not, Zonneplan may charge € 99 including VAT.
How green is Zonneplan?
According to the most recent electricity label, Zonneplan does not sell certified green electricity. What is more: since July 2023, Zonneplan Energie has only sold grey electricity. The administrative consumer mix consisted of 100% natural gas. The label states 349 grams of CO₂ and 0 grams of radioactive waste per kWh supplied. That seems strange for a company called Zonneplan. Zonneplan very deliberately does not buy Guarantees of Origin to make its electricity green on paper. Instead, the app shows how green the electricity on the Dutch grid is at any given moment. The company then tries to steer customers towards hours with a lot of wind and solar power.
In 2025, the ACM made Zonneplan adjust its explanation, because it was insufficiently clear that insight into the current grid mix is something different from the origin on the electricity label. Only after the ACM's intervention did Zonneplan begin to communicate honestly and clearly about the origin of the electricity supplied.
Solar panels from Zonneplan
At Zonneplan, solar panels play a central role. On 31 August 2026, the range of Zonneplan solar panels consisted of glass-glass panels of 465 Wp. Depending on the roof, Zonneplan combines these with a central Zonneplan One inverter or Zonneplan Evo micro-inverters. Micro-inverters can be particularly useful with multiple roof surfaces or partial shade, but are not necessary on every simple roof. According to the product page consulted, the panels come with an extensive product warranty and a power output warranty of up to 30 years. For the central One inverter, Zonneplan states a 10-year warranty. According to the Evo specifications, the Evo micro-inverters have a 20-year warranty. The Zonneplan warranty terms for solar panels of 1 October 2025 also contain obligations. The monitoring must remain active and Zonneplan must retain access to the necessary data.
Payback period of Zonneplan solar panels
In an example from June 2026, Zonneplan calculates with 11 panels of 455 Wp, an installation price of € 4.350 and an annual generation of 4.500 kWh. With 31% direct own consumption and the measured Zonneplan prices for 2025, this calculation gives the following result:
| Item | Calculation | Annual value |
|---|---|---|
| Used directly | 1.395 kWh × € 0,256 | € 357 |
| Fed back | 3.105 kWh × € 0,0792 | € 246 |
| Total yield | € 357 + € 246 | € 603 |
| Simple payback period | € 4.350 ÷ € 603 | 7,2 years |
This is Zonneplan's own calculation, but the company does use figures from sources including Milieu Centraal. The calculation is reliable in itself. The feed-in compensation used includes the Zonnebonus and is based on market prices from 2025. The calculated payback period is of course only indicative. The actual payback period depends in any case heavily on your quote price, location, shade, own consumption and future electricity prices. On other pages, Zonneplan also mentions payback periods of about 8 to 9,6 years. That difference arises from different assumptions about installation price, energy contract and feed-in compensation. So with Zonneplan solar panels, always have the full calculation supplied with the quote.
The Zonneplan home battery
The Zonneplan Nexus is an LFP home battery that charges and discharges at up to 11 kW. Zonneplan states a round-trip efficiency of up to 90%. The Zonneplan home battery can store your own solar power, buy electricity during cheap quarter-hours and feed energy back when the market or the electricity grid needs it. The Zonneplan app lets you choose between different modes, including using more of your own solar power and supporting the grid. The emergency power function supplies selected circuits and not automatically the entire home. The emergency power duration that can actually be achieved depends on the remaining battery charge and the power of the connected appliances.
Powerplay terms
The Zonneplan home battery is controlled remotely via Powerplay. According to the control terms of 12 May 2026, you give Zonneplan exclusive permission to control the Zonneplan home battery. You may not connect any other energy management system that interferes with this control. Technically, the Zonneplan home battery can work with an energy contract from another supplier. However, without an active Zonneplan Energie contract you do not receive a separate Powerplay payment from Zonneplan. The benefit then has to come through the bill from your own supplier. With a fixed or variable contract, trading with the battery can even turn out unfavourably. The terms describe the smart control as a best-efforts obligation. Zonneplan therefore does not guarantee any particular amount, number of trading moments or monthly yield.
Warranty on the Zonneplan home battery
According to the warranty terms, version 1.7 of 12 May 2026, the battery and the inverter have a warranty of ten years or, as far as the battery pack is concerned, 6.000 full charge cycles, whichever is reached first. Zonneplan guarantees at least 70% of the original capacity. In addition, Zonneplan offers a ten-year installation and service warranty, which covers diagnosis, labour, mounting and call-out charges. One of the conditions is that the installation remains connected to the Zonneplan network. Relocation or modification by another installer may affect the warranty.
What does the Zonneplan home battery cost and when does it pay for itself?
On 31 August 2026, Zonneplan published prices of € 4.690 for 10 kWh, € 5.490 for 15 kWh, € 7.290 for 20 kWh and € 9.090 for 35 kWh. These amounts include installation, but apply after a successful VAT refund. Zonneplan states that this is almost always possible for private individuals. The Belastingdienst sets conditions for this. You must use the battery for taxable trading in electricity. The invoice and the energy contract must be in the same name. Anyone participating in the small business scheme cannot simply deduct the VAT on the purchase. VAT may later be due on private use and on trading payments received.
On 8 May 2026, Zonneplan reported average yields over the preceding six months of € 300 for 10 kWh, € 475 for 15 kWh and € 606 for 20 kWh. If we double that six-month yield to create a simple annual picture, the following calculation results:
| Zonneplan home battery | Price after VAT refund | Reported six-month yield | Annual value with simple doubling | Payback period | Payback period at 50% lower annual value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kWh | € 4.690 | € 300 | € 600 | 7,8 years | 15,6 years |
| 15 kWh | € 5.490 | € 475 | € 950 | 5,8 years | 11,6 years |
| 20 kWh | € 7.290 | € 606 | € 1.212 | 6,0 years | 12,0 years |
Source: own calculation by EnergieAanbieding.nl using the Zonneplan prices and yields reported by Zonneplan over six months, checked on 31 August 2026. The calculation does not take financing interest into account. The column with 50% lower yield is a sensitivity scenario.
The favourable outcomes rely heavily on doubling just six months of real-world data. Zonneplan itself writes that income has fallen since European balancing markets have been eliminating price differences more quickly. The contract terms do not guarantee any future yield. Independent research shows a much wider range. CE Delft analysed thirteen Dutch households for Vereniging Eigen Huis and, for two calculated set-ups, found payback periods of 6,5 to 22 years. The researchers expect income from the imbalance market to fall as more batteries participate. A Berenschot study from 2025 arrived at about five to twelve years for combined trading strategies. This study was commissioned by Zonneplan. Milieu Centraal is more cautious and expects that a home battery will probably not pay for itself through savings on your own energy bill alone.
