Solar panels
With solar panels, you can save considerably on your energy bill in the long term. Solar panels consist of solar cells that capture sunlight and then convert it into energy. Solar energy is sustainable and generating it is better for the environment than generating energy by burning fossil fuels. Nationally, the share of solar energy in total energy generation is still minimal, but more and more private individuals and (small) businesses get part of their energy needs from solar panels.

The automatic analysis shows that either not enough connected roof surface is available, or that the solar irradiation on your roof is too low.

<!-- This can have various causes:

The roof already has a solar energy installation.

The identified roof is too small to install at least 2 kWp of PV power. This is the lower limit for a profitable installation.

Due to objects on your roof, the measured solar irradiation yields less than 700 kWh/year. That is too little to be economically profitable.

Availability of the solar atlas

For the calculation of solar irradiation, use was made of, among other things, the Actueel Hoogtebestand Nederland 2. This is a file with detailed and precise elevation data for the whole of the Netherlands. A digital elevation map, as it were. For the whole of the Netherlands, the height of every square metre is known.

The aerial photos have been made available by the municipalities. The operation of the solar atlas depends on the OpenStreetMap project (c) (OpenStreetMap contributors, CC-BY-SA), onto which our processing is projected. No rights can be derived from the solar atlas.

The solar atlas is suitable for all modern browsers from Internet Explorer 6 onwards and can be viewed on all mobile products.

01Why choose solar panels?
Solar panels are expensive and in the short term do not yet provide cost savings. Only in the longer term can a profit be made from using solar panels, thanks to a payback period. For solar panels, we are talking about an average payback period of about ten years, while their lifespan is estimated at around 25 years. Of course, maintenance and the efficiency of the solar panels also play a role here. Solar panels are therefore an investment for the future.
In addition to cost savings in the long term, another reason to choose solar panels is the brake they put on harmful climate change. Solar energy is very clean and causes no air, water or soil pollution. By purchasing solar panels, everyone can make their own small contribution to the energy transition and help halt climate change.
02When are solar panels profitable?
In the long term and with good maintenance, solar panels are almost always profitable, also in the Netherlands. How long it takes before the solar panels become profitable depends on various factors. In general, more expensive solar panels are actually better, although a critical eye always remains important. There is also a difference in the quality of solar panels, with a correspondingly higher or lower efficiency. The number of sunshine hours per year also matters for the total annual yield. It is a misconception that a solar panel generates no energy when it is cloudy, but in full sun and at the right angle the panel naturally produces more energy.
Besides the quality of the panel and the number of sunshine hours, the installation of the solar panels also plays a role in the efficiency delivered. For example, attention must be paid to the ventilation around the panel during installation. The energy yield of a solar panel is lower when the panel is very hot.
Other important factors are the angle of inclination at which a solar panel is installed and the direction the panel faces. In the Netherlands, the highest efficiency is achieved by installing solar panels at an angle of 36 degrees and facing due south. The angle of inclination and the direction a solar panel faces are expressed by the yield factor. This is the percentage of the maximum capacity of the solar panel that is achieved in relation to the direction the panels face and the angle of inclination at which they are installed. In practice, a yield factor of one hundred percent is never achieved, but under ideal conditions a yield factor of more than ninety percent is certainly achievable.
