Energy consumption of the iMac and the Mac Pro
When buying a new iMac or a Mac Pro, a great many different factors are always taken into account. People look at the screen size the device has, pay attention to the processor hidden inside and what about the storage capacity and the memory? What is often given remarkably little thought is the energy consumption of these devices. For people who want to deal consciously with electricity consumption at home, however, it is important to take this into account as well. We looked into the energy consumption of both the iMac and the Mac Pro and have set out all our findings in detail on this page.

01The energy consumption of the Mac Pro
The Mac Pro currently found on the market dates back to the year 2013. This turned out to be an important milestone in the history of the device. At that time Apple chose to move away from the aluminium version whose components could easily be replaced or upgraded. This version had to make way for a completely new and modern design that could stand out from the crowd not only visually, but also in terms of performance. The Mac Pro is a device that is clearly aimed at professional, creative users. This may include not only graphic designers, but also filmmakers as well as audio producers. In any case, regardless of the requirements they have, they will be able to get everything they could wish for out of the Mac Pro. This makes it an extremely reliable device.
Different configurations of the Mac Pro
All of the above is of course interesting, but in this article we were mainly going to talk about the energy consumption of these devices. Before we can do that, it is important to bear in mind that at the end of 2013 the Mac Pro was available in three different configurations. First, there was the 2,7 GHz 12-Core version with 16 GB 1866 DDR3 ECC memory as well as 256 GB flash storage and dual AMD FirePro D700 graphics processors. Another configuration offered a 3,5 GHz 6-core processor combined with 8 GB 1866 DDR3 ECC memory, 256 GB flash storage as well as dual AMD FirePro D500 graphics processors. The third version had a 3,7 GHz Quad-Core processor combined with 4 GB 1866 MHz DDR3 ECC memory, 256 GB flash storage and dual AMD FirePro D300 graphics processors.
How much is the energy consumption of the Mac Pro?
Now that it is clear what the different configurations of the Mac Pro on the market are, it is time to actually look at the electricity consumption of this computer, namely:
The 3,7 GHz Quad-Core version has an idle electricity consumption of 43 W. The maximum electricity consumption of this configuration is 205 W.
The 3,5 GHz 6-Core version has an idle electricity consumption of 43 W. The maximum electricity consumption of this configuration is 238 W.
The 2,7 GHz 12-Core version has an idle electricity consumption of 44 W. The maximum electricity consumption of this configuration is 270 W.
Do you need a really powerful configuration, but still want to be able to save on the electricity consumption it entails? In that case it is always a good idea to make the best possible use of sleep mode. This way you avoid having to switch your system on and off every time, while you can still save quite a lot of energy. Not using your Mac Pro for a longer time? Then preferably of course just shut it down completely.
02What about the energy consumption of the iMac?
People who like to use an Apple within their family but do not need a truly professional configuration can of course always choose to use an iMac. This way you not only choose a more affordably priced system, it is still more than powerful enough to run all the required applications. Just as with the Mac Pro, different configurations of the iMac are available on the market. In this respect, we distinguish between the following current configurations:
An iMac with a 27-inch Retina 5K display, a 4,2 GHZ Intel Quad-Core i7 processor, 64 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 SDRAM memory, a 3 TB Fushion Drive as well as an AMD Radeon Pro 580 with 8192 MB memory.
An iMac with a 21,5-inch Retina 4K display, a 3,6 GHZ Intel Quad-Core i7 processor, 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 SDRAM memory, a 512 GB Solid State Drive as well as an AMD Radeon Pro 560 with 4096 MB memory.
An iMac with a 21,5 inch display, 2,3 GHZ Intel Dual-Core i5, 16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 SDRAM memory and a 256 GB Solid State Drive.
The different configurations listed above mean that the iMac also has varying energy consumption. This can be an extra factor that potential buyers of these systems will want to take into account.
How much is the energy consumption of the iMac?
People who are about to buy an iMac will want to take a great many different things into account. Energy consumption can also be a not entirely unimportant factor to take into account. Depending on the chosen configuration, the following energy consumption will have to be taken into account:
The Retina 5K, 27-inch iMac has an idle electricity consumption of 71 W. The maximum electricity consumption is 217 W.
The Retina 4K, 21,5-inch iMac has an idle electricity consumption of 49 W. The maximum electricity consumption is 161 W.
The 21,5-inch iMac has an idle electricity consumption of 33 W. The maximum electricity consumption is 74 W.
Anyone planning to buy an iMac or a Mac Pro can use the information on this page to find out exactly what electricity consumption they should take into account.
