Energy costs of fish and an aquarium
Pets are found in almost every household. That is not without reason, because nothing is as cosy as an animal that keeps you company when you get home from work. Still, it is good to consider what kind of pet you take into the home. Having a pet ought to give an owner energy. A dog is an animal you go for walks with, a relaxing activity that gives energy. On the other hand, there are other pets that mainly consume energy.

01A beautiful tropical aquarium
Tropical aquariums are very popular. They are usually enormous tanks in which exotic fish are kept. They are a feast for the eyes and for many people an extremely calming sight. Still, it is a form of keeping pets that costs quite a lot of money. When an aquarium with a 900 kWh pump is used, quite a lot of extra electricity goes through a house. Such an aquarium can cost up to 190 euros per year; those are rather costly pets.
02A terrarium
Reptiles are mysterious pets. One person recoils from them enormously while another owner thinks they are absolutely wonderful. A terrarium is lit with a special terrarium heat lamp. Such lamps have a high wattage and they are on for a considerable part of the day to keep the terrarium warm and light. The lamps that are suitable for such a terrarium usually start somewhere around 100 watts. This means that you can spend up to 120 euros a year on a terrarium containing animals that can hardly be regarded as companion animals. So when buying a reptile as a pet, it is good to consider carefully whether it will really bring the desired satisfaction. Otherwise it is merely a high expense.
03Koi carp that cost a fortune
A pond in the garden is something more and more people want. The splashing of the water in such a garden pond has something calming about it, and it is therefore no coincidence that a beautiful pond is often included in the plan when a new garden is designed. Still, it is good to think about what kind of pond is installed. After all, quite a few costs are involved. A small pond with goldfish in it will have to be filtered constantly. That comes with a limited price tag of about 40 euros per year.
Koi carp are fish that are increasingly kept as a hobby. A costly hobby, it has turned out. A pond with koi carp not only needs a filter pump; it also has to be kept at temperature. Such a pond entails costs of 375 euros per year in electricity for the pump, and that does not yet include the costs of the thermostat. Unless you want to keep koi carp to breed them and sell them on for a considerable price, it is an investment that does not pay off. These pets cost much more energy than they yield.
